Former Hong Kong race caller David Raphael's decision to help Gerald Ryan get some owners for Problem Solver has reaped a big dividend at the Gold Coast.
Problem Solver ran home strongly to beat She Sees Everything by a long neck with a half length to Zoology in the A$250,000 Magic Millions Maiden (1200m), opening race on the big day at the Gold Coast.
Ryan paid A$160,000 for Problem Solver as a yearling and approached Raphael to help find owners for her.
"David put together a syndicate of 18 owners, all from Hong Kong, so they will be very pleased with the $150,000 first prize," Ryan said. "She had run second at her three starts for us and I knew she was near a win."
Ryan believes the Hinchinbrook filly can go on to win in better company after running 1:08.87 for the 1200 metres, which was a class record and less than a second outside the track record.
Winning jockey Robbie Fradd was impressed with the effort and also predicted a bright future for Problem Solver. "They went very quickly in the lead and that suited her," he said.
Jim Byrne said $80 longshot She Sees Everything should have gone close to winning after having to come wide in the straight.
The favourite Dinnigan blew from $1.75 to $2.40 after she sweated up badly in the parade ring and led to the 200 before weakening to fourth.
