Wellington Guineas winner Scott Base may have one further domestic start ahead of a spell.
Australia is off the menu this season for Scott Base in favour of perhaps one more local start ahead of a spell.
Suggestions of a Sydney campaign have been discounted by Johno Benner, co-trainer of Saturday’s dogged Wellington Guineas winner, and the only race firmly in connections’ sights is the Gr. 3 Manawatu Classic at Awapuni on March 31.
“It was great to see him bounce back from the setback that cost him a start in the Derby, he really showed his class,” Benner said today. “We won’t be going to Sydney though, the Rosehill Guineas is on Saturday, he wouldn’t make the field for the Doncaster and the Australian Derby is probably not the right race for him.
“I think 1600 to 2000 metres is his go, so if he’s going to have another start it will most likely be the Manawatu Classic.
“We did think about the Easter, but it’s not a Group One any more and the stake is down to $100,000, and besides it’s getting a bit late (April 21), he needs to be having a break by then.”
Benner and his partner Holly Wynyard continued their hot run of form at Trentham on Saturday when Awesome Al, their only other runner on the day, won the final race.
“The team’s being going great,” Benner said. “That’s five wins from our last six starters, so you could wish for more.”
