Champion Kiwi pacer Lazarus has made a statement in his American qualifier, running 1.48.6 at The Meadowlands in New Jersey.
He trailed early from post one before popping off the back of leader Hayden Hanover at the top of the straight and bursting away with a 25.6 final quarter to win.
North America Cup-winning three-year-old Lather Up, beaten once in his life, was brave in second.
Driver Yannick Gingras was complimentary of Lazarus after jumping out of the sulky for trainer Jimmy Takter.
“I couldn’t be any happier with him,” he said to local media.
It is being reported that a trip north of the border to tackle a heat of the Canadian Derby on August 25 could be in the offing for Lazarus.
