Jockey Hamish McNeill suffered a suspected collarbone or shoulder fracture in his fall from Shamal in yesterday’s Hawke’s Bay Steeplechase.
Shamal dislodged McNeill at the fence at the top of the home straight during the first lap of the 4800-metre feature. McNeil was unable to be moved from the track while he was attended to by ambulance personnel, so the remainder of the field were directed around that fence in the second and third laps of the race.
“H McNeill was transferred to hospital for further evaluation/treatment for a suspected fracture of the right collarbone/shoulder,” the stipendiary stewards’ report said.
Gary Walsh fell twice during yesterday’s meeting – from I’m Bronson in race one and El Corby in the Hawke’s Bay Hurdle – and escaped injury on both occasions. Stuart Higgins (Hesalljazz), Charlie Studd (Arite Guru) and Aaron Kuru (Stagehand) were also uninjured in falls during the programme. There were no reported injuries to any horses.
