J B MAUNEY (3) was super good fresh up last week, simply bowed to one that came with a better run. If that didn’t take the edge off him he should go one better and win this time. TAKEMYBREATHAWAY (6) was the big punt horse on debut and she did the job. Transfers to Ross Houghton at Woodend Beach. Obviously petty smart. ART COURAGE (1) can definitely get a slice of this drawn one. She’s handy when ready and after one run off a spell closer to form. DARK RAGE (2), CINDY BROMAC (9) and MINI MINE YET (10) to be included.
SUGGESTED BET: J B MAUNEY Win
TONIQUE DE FEU (12) looks the pick of them with everything going his way, good fifth last week. Draw could actually be good for him following them out under no early pressure. Plenty of sound eachway types in the race. RITEUR (6), MONRIKA (5), UNIQUE MARSHALL (7), GALLEONS GLORY (13) among that bunch. Would also consider at odds RACHMANINOV (1) off gate one, and CHIVASION (10) following him out. Open race, back the one you like.
SUGGESTED BET: TONIQUE DE FEU Eachway
Sticking with MACHS MARETA (8) after failing in the Banks Peninsula Cup Sunday, she can show her best form again here off a wide draw, will get back them come with a late finish. This can also suit PLAYA VISTA (9). She was knocked over both days at Blenheim and had just horrid luck the whole trip. Bunce back to form would be greatly deserved. Working around the two mares here, with DOCTOR TIM (1) and NOTA BENE DENARIO (2) must-haves from inside draws, as too FUN IN THE DARK (6) from wider, KARDESLER (13) and FRANCO TEXAS (14) off the back row. Open to upset, a good betting race.
SUGGESTED BET: MACHS MARETA / PLAYA VISTA Eachway
Oddly, I doubt if this is just a matter of All Stars turning up to win – and that is odd in the two-year-old section. COPPERFIELD (3) looks the pick of their trio right now, very impressive at the Rangiora trials leading in with scurrying finish. But he meets some nice stock. Ken Barron has THE WARRIOR (1) and NOOSA BEACH (5) debuting off strong trial runs, the former really tidy at Ashburton Jan 22, not knocked around, the latter winning that trial and quite strong through the line home in 56.5 and 26.7. LAVER (2) was last in that trial but he’s better than that, the son of former star mare Venus Serena. MONGOLIAN MARSHAL (4) ticks along nicely, forward run very possible, and All Stars FLYING EVEN BETTOR (6) and VIRGIL (7) obviously not to be counted out, just not counting them in this time.
SUGGESTED BET: COPPERFIELD Win
NOOSA BEACH beats among them THE WARRIOR and LAVER in Ashburton trial
ANOTHER CHAPTER (4) looked a next up winning chance with solid third last week. Nice mare when she hits form and usually holds it when she does. Obvious chance. SCARLETT BANNER (5) is likely going to profit from the moving start. Very good when she puts it all together and she won’t get many better opportunities than this. MAJESTIC HURRICANE (11) does have some work to do from the draw but after a smart victory here last week he looks capable of going back-to-back. Inside draws could help MICHELLE (1) and ONE OVER DA SKYE (2), speedy mares with a real chance to cause minor upsets from economical trips.
SUGGESTED BET: ANOTHER CHAPTER Eachway
I’VE ALREADY TOLD YOU (8) was game in defeat last week at Ascot Park. He lobbed to parked and though unable to go with the winner he still fought bravely. Like the draw, he appreciates some space early and I’d doubt he will be sitting back for too long in this race. Big chance. CHITURA (3) has finally found her mojo again. Good mare this, back on track after a very disappointing few months. No doubting her ability to win again, must rate. TANGO TARA (11) needs a wee run through to save some acreage. Big win here last week and simply flying. BARDOT (1) can give plenty of cheek fresh up from gate one, ANYTIME (6) and TUAPEKA TRICK (9) also in that top-four mix.
SUGGESTED BET: Boxed Trifecta – 1,3,6,8,9,11
GREAT THINGS HAPPEN (7) really had them rolling through that final 800m last week, a quick quarter down the back straight and good enough to hold on. A different type of race back to a handicap but he should be winning again if he maintains that form. Without declaring him a moral, I’d offer the remainder some chance to beat him. Looking for MISSANDEI (6) to run him close, even her stablemate BELLES SON (5) who found a way to win again three starts back and could grab another. SUNDONS FLYER (3) and THE DOMINATOR (4) also capable.
SUGGESTED BET: MISSANDEI Win (value)
ELLE MAC (6) and DREAM ABOUT ME (9) stand out. Either will win it, probably the former off the draw. These mares are well ahead of the eight-ball when it comes to mares races. We look for those to chase them home. Definitely having DIBABA (2) after a big run last week and from a lovely draw, also MOSSDALE ROSE (4) and STEP UP (11), they performed well last week without being able to beat Nandolo who led and got a cheap time of it. At longer odds BETTOR’S HEART (1) could bolster the earn in the trifecta or First4.
SUGGESTED BET: First4 – 6,9/1,2,4,6,9,11/1,2,4,6,9,11/1,2,3,4,6,8,9,10,11
GOODTHINGSTAKETIME (1) debuts off inferior draw in hot field last week, has shown nice ability at trials and well worth a look second up. THUNDERFROMTHETHRONE (3) has been very prominent at trials, scratched after accepting it good maiden race last week. Expect bold debut. KOROMIKO EYRE (2) split them with the draws, could well end up ahead of them after bold third in that tough race. PROSECUTION WITNESS (7) looked to get his chance after leading but still fought on for fourth. May take benefit from it. OHOKA ACHILLES (10) chased home well last week and though needing some luck has winning claims.
SUGGESTED BET: Boxed Trifecta – 1,2,3,7,10
